A racing wheel comes loose from the car of Lando Norris after he collided with team-mate Piastri at the start of the US GP short race.
McLaren Formula 1 bosses Brown and Stella attributed opposing racers for the collision between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris at the beginning of the US GP sprint race.
The Australian driver, ahead of Norris in the championship by 22 points, made contact with his fellow McLaren driver after making contact with the Hulkenberg.
The collision forced out both team drivers from the race, along with the Alonso, who was on the inner side of Hulkenberg.
McLaren Leaders Express Disappointment Over Crash
Zak Brown, McLaren Racing's CEO, commented to Sky Sports that some of the driving at the start was "inexperienced", remarking: "Obviously Hulkenberg hit Oscar and he had no reason being where he was."
The team boss Andrea Stella added: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the opportunity to race."
"It is unexpected that some drivers with a lot of expertise don't act with necessary care. Go to the first corner, make sure you don't damage other drivers and carry on."
The team suggested that Stella was pointing to both Hulkenberg and Alonso.
Contrasting Views on the Crash
Nevertheless, 1996 world champion Hill, commentating for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he believed Piastri had not demonstrated enough awareness of the dangers of the opening turn of an Formula 1 event when he chose to cut back to try to pass Norris.
Piastri had a better start than Norris and initially competed on the outside on the uphill entry to the corner.
However he then moved inside in an effort to get a advantage on his teammate on the way out, only to make contact with Hulkenberg.
Racer Comments After the Collision
Piastri said: "Not ideal but I did not see what happened, I tried to move inside on Lando and we were both very far from the corner apex and then got a hit and it sent me into Lando. Unfortunate."
Norris said: "I just was struck, right? I was not at fault. Further back things happened and I just was unfortunate and was struck because of it. I am unsure. I need to review a bit more thoroughly. It's more drivers further back just being a bit reckless and we are the result of that."
Alonso said: "At one point I believed I was in the right place on the inside, but some cars came very fast from the outer side switching back and then I was there in the center."
The Sauber driver, who had qualified a season-best fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from yesterday in the trash. Just chaotic."
"Oscar steered inward pretty aggressively trying to get the inside line and exit of the first corner but I cannot vanish."
"I had Fernando attack on the inner side and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Oscar steered inward and the collision was unavoidable."
Aftermath and McLaren's Reaction
McLaren will analyze the incident with their drivers but not until the race weekend. Both vehicles needed significant repairs before qualifying session at 22:00 BST on Saturday.
Stella said: "Overall disappointed but we take it on the chin, we are now focusing on repairing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the event from there."
"Our team holds a strong position from our performance point of view so I trust we have the opportunity to race, compete fairly and capitalise on our performance."
"Championship points are the key thing, I don't want to talk about bad intentions, just caution. A little more prudence would be good for all involved."
Championship Implications
The race was won by Red Bull's Verstappen, who closed in on both McLaren drivers in the standings - he is now fifty-five points behind Piastri and thirty-three behind of Norris.
Stella said: "The implication is what the numbers says - we lost eight championship points with both racers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a very competitive vehicle and two skilled racers. We anticipate just some standard competition."
Verstappen said he was taking the title race one event at a time.
