Italy's Watchdog Slams Lift Ticket Cost Increases as Completely Unjustified

A leading Italian consumer association are raising alarms over what they describe as completely unjustified price increases for lift tickets this winter season, warning that skiing could become a luxury reserved for affluent individuals.

Substantial Price Increases Throughout the Country

Across the Alpine regions and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern territories to the ski runs of central Italy, prices are poised to increase by up to 40% compared to 2021 levels, according to recent analysis.

The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which provides entry to all 12 resorts in the exclusive Dolomites, will now cost skiers €86 per day this season. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a daily ski pass is expected to reach €60, after experiencing substantial visitor surges last season.

Annual Ticket Prices and Supplementary Charges

At the same time, annual skiing tickets will vary between €755 per adult in Roccaraso to upwards of €1,800 in the Aosta valley.

The expense of hiring ski equipment has also increased, along with lodging costs and restaurant prices throughout mountain resorts.

Consumer Group President Cites Unjustified Increases

The consumer association president, leading the consumer protection group, emphasized that the price increases—which operators blame on increased utility expenses, resort maintenance, and demand for better equipment—were completely unjustified and unacceptable.

"Particularly since Italian inflation rates are under control and energy tariffs, which had increased expenses for mountain facility managers in 2022, have returned to normal," he explained.

The president further stated that prices have climbed to points where less wealthy individuals are being compelled to skip their traditional settimana bianca, or winter vacation, altogether.

Tourism Decline and Broader Context

He noted a significant drop in alpine visitors during the 2024-2025 season, with 1 million fewer Italians hitting the slopes compared to the prior season due to rising costs.

Despite these increases, Italy remains a cheaper option for skiing enthusiasts in the European region compared to nearby Swiss resorts, French destinations, and Austria.

Olympic Context

The growing concern over skiing costs comes as the country prepares to host the 2026 Winter Games between the first three weeks of February. Italy's foreign minister, the foreign affairs official, announced on Friday that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations calling for a "worldwide ceasefire" during the global competition.

"With Milan Cortina we must also send a peaceful communication and dialogue... to stop warfare during the Games," Tajani emphasized.
