Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Online Abuse Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of space.

The group of women also included leaders in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
