A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was made public, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the end of January increased in the period preceding Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the president had been apprehended.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a sudden change in positions right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," commented Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other platform users also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A bill introduced on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from elections to political events.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
